Today there is enough evidence that physical activity is effective as a preventive treatment measure for a variety of diseases. Despite the evidence, there are a lot of us who do little to no physical activity. For those wanting to exercise but struggling to do it, there is help not only through counseling but a written prescription by a doctor for physical activity known as FAR, as well as a follow-up.
Physical activity by medical prescription, FaR, is a working method used by the health care system in Sweden that in recent years has gained attention both nationally and internationally because of its results. This methodology started with adults in 2007 and later, was also applied to children and young people.
Recently in November, I took the opportunity to become a FAR leader who is the person responsible to meet and guide patients who have been prescribed to do physical activities by their doctor at the training facilities in Stockholm.
As Zumba instructors, we meet people with different capabilities and health challenges that need different approaches so it's very important to be aware of these personal barriers. The better we understand and empathize with our Zumba participants, the better they feel about themselves and will not give up their journey of building new and healthier habits in their daily life.
This educational training is run by the government and it was the perfect occasion to:
Get to know the methodology and have a good understanding of the importance of physical activity for the health and well-being of any individual.
Have a good understanding of the importance of motivational work and how physical activity can be used for disease prevention and treatment purposes
Have a practical understanding of different intensity levels and the change of habits of individuals
Get to know more fitness colleagues and authorities during the training.
At the end of the training, guess what we did? 5,4,3,2,1
My #zumbacolleague Sture Nystrand and I did a Zumba Break and danced to an afrobeat song called Buga (Lo Lo Lo) by Kizz Daniel and Tekno.
